Today’s episode of the Red Wing Oil and Gas HSE Podcast is a little different. Instead of having a guest on the show, Mark and Patrick talk about Marketing Safety to your employees.
The prevailing messages being used to market safety to employees in the oil and gas industry take a few forms: Do it right the first time; Noone gets hurt; Leave with all of your fingers and toes.
The problem with these messages is they aren’t compelling because who in their right mind would take up the opposing viewpoint. Safety is marketed as the “common sense solution,” but without a truly compelling argument, the message is often forgotten moments after starting a job.
How then do you market safety to the oil and gas industry? What makes a compelling argument for my employees to work safely and follow procedures?
With his own oil and gas consulting business, Lean Oilfield, Patrick talks about marketing safety in a new way that if done well will have your employees thinking about their actions in a whole new light.

Throughout the years, little has changed the way the oil and gas industry markets safety. Employees are told to work safe, wear your PPE and follow the procedures but HSE incidents still happen.
One of the problems with the prevailing messages about safety is that there is no internal conflict for employees, so most safety campaigns have little lasting effect on safety metrics.
At Lean Oilfield, we have a different way of marketing safety. By merging existing marketing tactics with a new way of thinking about safety in industrial settings we focus on changing the narrative and getting buy-in at every level of an organization.
